Abstract

Human trafficking is a public health emergency and the antithesis of social justice. Healthcare providers have an opportunity to recognize, support, advocate for, and improve health outcomes of victims of human trafficking in the healthcare setting through a trauma-informed lens.

  • Identify the trafficking cycle and common emotional, behavioral, physical, and social signs of trafficking.
  • Explain a trauma-informed approach to support the needs of individuals who have been trafficked.

Author Qualifications:

Dr. Mays is an Associate Professor and the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty Track Co-Coordinator at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing. She is a board certified FNP with over 17 years clinical experience in family health, women’s health, labor and delivery, and pediatrics. Dr. Mays maintains a clinical practice as Clinic Director at UAB at the WellHouse, where she provides primary care to victims of sex trafficking.
