The Advantages of Using a Dental Operating Microscope

By Donato Napoletano, DMD

Commercial Supporter: Global Surgical Corporation

During the latter part of the last century, endodontics was the first specialty in dentistry to embrace the dental operating microscope (DOM). Other dental specialties followed: periodontics, prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, and oral surgery. Dentists are finally realizing the importance of having optimal equipment for sight and working in a comfortable position that reduces fatigue and stress on the neck and back. DOMs have numerous benefits for the doctor compared with loupes and help facilitate communication between the doctor and the patient.

  • Describe the benefits of the dental operating microscope compared with loupes.
  • Explain why the enhanced visualization afforded by a microscope is clinically important.
  • Discuss how images improve patient acceptance.
  • Explain how microscopes assist in achieving better ergonomics.
