Author Qualifications:

Judith Haber, PhD, APRN, FAAN (Moderator)
Dr. Judith Haber is Professor Emerita at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and Executive Director of the Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice (OHNEP) Program. An internationally recognized leader in psychiatric nursing and oral–systemic health, she is the author of award-winning textbooks and the landmark AJPH article Putting the Mouth Back in the Head. Dr. Haber has received numerous national awards for excellence in nursing, education, and practice, and serves on several national committees advancing interprofessional oral health.

Gordon Barfield, DDS
Dr. Gordon Barfield is a leading expert on dental artificial intelligence. He spent 33 years as a practicing dentist and then orthodontist — treating patients everywhere from his own private practices to the US Air Force. Today, Dr. Barfield serves as Senior Clinical Manager at Overjet, where he plays a critical role in both developing the company’s technology and educating oral health leaders. He earned his DDS degree from The University of North Carolina, and completed his certification and residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Nevada, and is currently completing the Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence at Purdue University.​

Jay Patel, BDS, MS, PhD
Dr. Jay Patel is an Assistant Professor of Health Informatics and Dentistry at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. Dr. Patel is a dentist, informaticist, and clinical scientist, and he holds a Master's and PhD in Informatics. Dr. Patel's research endeavors revolve around the strategic utilization of vast electronic health record data (EHR) and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods to improve patient care and outcomes.

Michael Helgeson, DDS
Dr. Michael Helgeson is one of the founders and the CEO of Apple Tree Dental, an innovative nonprofit organization that operates eight Centers for Dental Health and delivers on-site care in collaboration with more than 145 urban and rural organizations. Dr. Helgeson served as a United States Public Health Service dentist in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1986 to 1990. He received a 15-year exceptional service award in 2002 from the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Helgeson was a Minnesota Area Geriatric Education Center Fellow from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Helgeson has held appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Helgeson is a member of the American Dental Association’s National Eldercare Advisory Committee and has served as presidents of both the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry and the Special Care Dentistry Association. In 2011, Dr. Helgeson was selected to receive the Saul Kamen Award, the highest honor awarded by the Special Care Dentistry Association. He has served as an expert consultant to the National Quality Forum, Institute of Medicine, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and U.S. Administration for Community Living (formerly the Administration on Aging).
