A walk through the oral care aisle of any drug or big box store reveals a dizzying array of options for over-the-counter products meant to help individuals care for their oral health daily. Self-delivered oral hygiene is the foundation for good oral health. Dental healthcare providers can enhance the health of their patients both in the dental office and through coaching them to improve self-delivered oral hygiene. Discerning which products are best for patients based upon their individual clinical conditions and risk factors can be a challenge. This article discusses common and emerging active ingredients in dentifrices (toothpastes) to better guide oral health providers to provide evidence-based recommendations on dentifrices for their patients.
