The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to be the dominant topic of discussion and debate in the oral healthcare community and the world at large. The virus’ impact on clinical dentistry has been profound; it has also been fraught with changing and often conflicting information, particularly in regard to patient and practitioner safety during aerosol-generating procedures.

Join Michael Glick, DMD, and special guests Mark Wolff, DDS, PhD, Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry; and Richard Niederman, DMD, professor and chair, Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion at New York University College of Dentistry, and Co-Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for QED as they address and discuss the available information and sift through the chaff to illuminate best practices.

Michael Glick, DMD

Michael Glick, DMD, is Professor, School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Dr. Glick has authored more than 300 journal publications, book chapters and editorials, and has edited and co-edited 10 books. He is the recipient of more than six million dollars of grant support for scientific and educational purposes, and served as chair for the Vision 2020, World Dental Federation (FDI), and is presently co-chairing FDI’s Vision 2030.

Dr. Glick has served as President of the American Board of Oral Medicine and Dean, School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, and is the immediate-past Editor of The Journal of the American Dental Association.

Deborah Weisfuse, MS, DMD

Dr. Deborah Weisfuse, President of the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders, has served her profession as the first woman President of the New York State Dental Association. She is presently a Trustee of the New York State Dental Foundation, Advisory Director of the New York County Dental Society, Advisory Board Member of Project Accessible Oral Health, and Board member at Large of the American Friends of the Dental Volunteers for Israel.

She has been elected to the Committee on Annual Meetings of the ADA. Dr. Weisfuse has also had the honor of serving on the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) Predoctoral Review Committee, and has consulted for the Commission nationally and internationally.

Dr. Weisfuse has a MS from Downstate Medical School of the State University of New York and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Her GPR and Chief Residency were at Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center, now known as Northwell in New York. She has taught at 2 dental schools, 2 GPR programs and has practiced general dentistry in Manhattan.

In 2019, the ADA conferred upon Dr. Weisfuse the Jeffrey Dalin Distinguished Volunteer Service Award for her work with Give Kids a Smile NYC, the largest program in the United States. In 2020, Dr. Weisfuse was also honored by the Assembly of the State of New York, with a Proclamation acknowledging her leadership achievements. In addition, she has been awarded numerous honorary fellowships within the profession.

Mark S. Wolff, DDS, PhD

Dr. Mark S. Wolff is the Morton Amsterdam Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and a Professor in the Department of Preventative and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Wolff joined Penn Dental Medicine as the 12th Dean of the School. He is a celebrated teacher, globally engaged scholar, and deeply experienced clinician. Prior to joining Penn Dental Medicine, he was professor and chair of cariology and comprehensive care at the College of Dentistry at New York University (NYU) and also the College’s senior associate dean for development and alumni relations. Dr. Wolff has completed numerous international research and oral health assessment programs and has been a lifelong advocate and dental provider for individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities of all ages. He has served as the principal or co-principal investigator on multiple benchtop and clinical research projects, investigating dental caries, novel remineralizing agents, dental erosion, periodontal disease, dental materials, and dentinal hypersensitivity. He has co-authored over 100 scientific papers, text chapters, and edited multiple textbooks. Dr. Wolff lectures worldwide and is a frequent consultant to the industry. He has been the principal or co-investigator on nearly $9.0 million in industrial and National Institute of Health-funded research. He has been a lifelong advocate and educator for individuals with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities through the lifespan.

Richard Niederman, DMD

Dr. Richard Niederman is professor and chair, Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion at New York University College of Dentistry, and Co-Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Quality-improvement, Evidence-based Dentistry (QED). He graduated magna cum laude in 1976 from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he also received his periodontal specialty training. He received certificate training in Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford University in 1996. He is the founding USA editor of the journal Evidence-Based Dentistry; co-author of the book Evidence-based Dentistry, and author of more than 100 peer reviewed scientific articles. NIH, PCORI, CMS, and foundations support his current work in urban New York and rural New Hampshire, and his prior work in urban Boston, and rural Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, and Maine. Dr. Niederman has also collaborated on programs in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. His work, over the last 15 years, focuses on creation, dissemination and implementation of community-based caries prevention programs. This now has evolved to a program of SAFE Dentistry (Safe Aerosol Free Emergent Dentistry). These bring primary and secondary preventive care to people, rather than people to care.
