Abstract
Despite the evidence that dental care during pregnancy is safe and even vital to health, misinformation persists that may dissuade women from seeking oral healthcare at this crucial time. In this special Compendium eBook, David C. Alexander, BDS, MSc, DDPH, and colleagues present a series of five continuing education (CE) articles on the importance of dental care before, during, and after pregnancy, both for mothers and children.
CE Article 1 summarizes guidelines for dental care as a safe and essential part of a healthy pregnancy. The authors discuss physiological changes that occur and their relevance to oral care, risk factors for oral conditions, timely preventive strategies, and the need for interprofessional collaboration.
CE Article 2 offers a patient-centered approach to counseling and behavioral change for women in a healthy pregnancy. The authors provide a framework of patient-centered interventions to improve patient involvement in their oral health and overall well-being, focusing on the use of motivational interviewing.
CE Article 3 explains the importance of taking an interdisciplinary approach to oral healthcare during pregnancy by collaborating with the woman’s perinatal team. Current guidelines support this teamwork and define the roles of healthcare providers in the care of these patients.
CE Article 4 further defines the dental team’s role in maternal and child oral health. The authors identify risk factors that can determine poor dental health for the child, describe appropriate perinatal interventions to foster healthy oral conditions in a child’s early years, and review recommendations for establishing a dental home.
CE Article 5 completes this series by focusing on management of oral health in a complicated pregnancy. The authors discuss potential pregnancy complications, their implications for oral health, and the standards for management of patients with a complicated pregnancy.

- Describe the systemic physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy, including those encountered in the oral cavity
- Discuss the current guidelines and consensus statements for oral health and dental care during pregnancy
- Assess risk factors for oral disease in pregnant patients to allow timely preventive strategies and restorative services

- Identify common pregnancy complications that may affect maternal and fetal health and discuss how they can affect oral health
- Develop strategies to provide necessary oral healthcare for patients with complicated pregnancies and to allow reduction of risks for overall and oral health
